Known for its impressive variety of traditional German dishes, Kartoffel Kiste is particularly celebrated for its hearty selections centered around potatoes, bringing a touch of home-cooked comfort to all who dine here.
As I stepped into the restaurant, I was immediately struck by the welcoming ambiance and friendly staff. The menu boasts a plethora of options featuring locally sourced ingredients that reflect the rich culinary traditions of the region. One standout dish is the Kappes Teerdisch, offering a delightful trio of options like the savory Mit Gebratener Blut Und Leberwurst, which beautifully combines the flavors of black and white pudding for a truly authentic experience. Another must-try is the “Trierer Dreierlei”, a perfect sampler of Kassler, Fleischkäse, and Leberkloß, showcasing the best of German comfort food.
The baked potatoes, or Frisch aus dem Kartoffelofen, are another highlight, especially the version topped with marinated salmon and herbal quark, adding a fresh twist to the classic dish. Priced reasonably, starting from €7.20, these baked potatoes are a staple for any diner wishing to delve into the essence of Kartoffel Kiste.
As evidenced by charming reviews from regular patrons, the restaurant boasts a loyal fanbase, particularly among an older crowd who appreciate the welcoming environment and substantial portions. Stopped by for lunch on a somewhat busy Friday. The place was fairly quiet when we arrived but it filled up quickly. It's fairly popular, especially amongst an older crowd, as the food also caters to that audience, but I was invited. Two of us had the schnitzel with paprika sauce and one had the mushroom cream schnitzel. The portions are generous but I feel like the food is very much cafeteria quality; the schnitzels felt deep fried and not pan fried. The fries were well prepared though, but the paprika sauce was very runny and not at all heartily seasoned. Staff was friendly and attentive though.

I’ve visited this restaurant twice now, both times for lunch. The first time, I had to wait in a short queue before getting a table, but today I was seated immediately without any delay. The service is very friendly, especially by German standards. On top of that, the service is incredibly fast. From placing the order to having the food on the table, it took no more than five minutes. The food is excellent. The flavors are very well balanced and everything is seasoned beautifully. Even though there are some fried items on the menu, the dishes aren’t overly greasy, which makes the meal feel lighter and more enjoyable. I tried the soup with croutons, two variations of schnitzel, and the “Trierer Gefüllte” Kartoffelklöße (stuffed potato dumplings). Every dish was delicious, you can really taste the care put into the preparation and the quality of the ingredients. This restaurant is a must-try in Trier. Whether you're looking for a quick and tasty lunch or a place with consistent quality, it delivers on all fronts.

We had lunch here and it was an enjoyable experience. The food was tasty, the portions were big enough and the meals were served without much waiting. I should say it was totally worth the price which was reasonable. The staff were friendly and spoke both German and English. Even the menu was in both languages. As for the drinks, we tried two types of sweet Riesling wines and they were both very good.

Our first foray at a restaurant in a foreign land. What a find! The staff was very kind and attentive. The menu selection was bounteous. The prices were nice, especially for the area. I found something on the menu that I have been looking for for years in the states. Marinated herring. I was in heaven. My wife had the German Style Meatloaf. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere was just perfect. My new favorite restaurant ever!

Wonderful food and wine in an outdoor setting. We had literally arrived in Germany this same day and the warmth of our server and the excellent food and drink started our trip on the right foot. Weather permitting recommend eating outside. We sent the next day for the dessert which was excellent as well
